Our chickens are raised seasonally on pasture here at Widnor Farms in the Pacific Northwest. We raise our birds with a focus on fresh forage, plenty of outdoor space, excellent nutrition and low-stress handling from pasture through processing.
Is your chicken pasture-raised?
Yes. Our chickens live outdoors on pasture and are moved to fresh ground daily. Moving them regularly gives them access to fresh forage while naturally distributing nutrients across our pastures.
What do your chickens eat?
Our chickens receive a custom-milled organic feed formulated to meet their nutritional needs. They also spend their days grazing clover, grasses, insects and other forage from our pastures. During the growing season, we estimate forage can make up approximately 40% of their diet.
Do you use antibiotics or added hormones?
Our chickens are raised without antibiotics. Federal law prohibits the use of added hormones in poultry, so no hormones are used either.
Are your chickens raised year-round?
Our chickens are primarily raised seasonally, from spring through early fall, when our Pacific Northwest pastures are actively growing. We believe pasture-raised should actually mean access to meaningful pasture.
Where is your chicken processed?
Right here on our farm. Our chickens are processed in our own licensed poultry processing facility, allowing us to oversee our birds from pasture through processing.
Why does pasture-raised chicken cook differently?
Pasture-raised chickens spend their lives walking, scratching and foraging, which means they actually use their muscles. The result can be a firmer texture and richer flavor than conventional chicken. For the best results, we recommend cooking gently and avoiding overcooking.
